AdBlue, SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and DPF (diesel particulate filter) messages can look similar on the dashboard while originating from very different places: fluid quality, dosing, sensors, wiring, exhaust leaks, temperature, an underlying engine fault or simply the duty cycle. A fault code alone does not prove which part has failed.

How the system works in one paragraph

Euro VI trucks inject AdBlue (a 32.5 per cent urea solution to ISO 22241) into the hot exhaust ahead of the SCR catalyst, where it converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. NOx sensors before and after the catalyst check that the conversion is happening. The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration. If the control unit sees poor conversion, poor fluid, an empty tank, a sensor fault or a blocked filter, it warns the driver and, after a countdown, reduces torque and eventually limits speed as the emissions regulations require.

Photograph the dashboard and note the exact text, icon, mileage or time countdown, any power change and when it first appeared. Record the AdBlue level, where and when the tank was last filled, whether diesel could have gone in the AdBlue filler, and any recent repair, jump-start or battery disconnection.

Do not create a no-restart unnecessarily

Follow the manufacturer's handbook and your fleet escalation process. Repeated key cycles, clearing codes with a generic tool, or driving on past the countdown can complicate diagnosis and leave the vehicle immobilised or crawling in a place you would not have chosen. If the countdown is short, plan the stop while you still have full power.

AdBlue-specific causes to consider

  • Empty or low tank with a faulty level sender showing a false reading.
  • Poor quality or contaminated fluid, including tap water, diesel in the AdBlue tank or old stock; the quality sensor will trigger a fault.
  • Crystallisation around the injector or in the mixer after long low-load running.
  • Frozen fluid: AdBlue freezes at minus 11°C and the tank heater must work in winter.
  • Pump, injector, heater, pressure or temperature sensor faults and the wiring to them.
  • NOx sensor failure, the most common single cause of a false "poor conversion" derate.

DPF-specific causes to consider

Frequent short, low-speed journeys that never reach regeneration temperature; a failed or blocked EGR; injector or turbo faults raising soot; an interrupted regeneration; or ash loading in a filter that is due for cleaning. A "regeneration required" or "filter loading high" message usually asks for a period of sustained driving or a parked regeneration before it becomes a fault.

Ask about diagnostic compatibility

Give the vehicle make, model, year, engine and registration. Confirm the provider can read the relevant engine and aftertreatment systems, perform manufacturer procedures such as forced regeneration, SCR system tests and adaptation resets, and has access to the technical data for your vehicle. Not every mobile mechanic can do this; the ones who can will say so plainly.

Repair, do not defeat

Deletes, emulators and software intended to bypass emissions controls are not a legitimate fix. In the UK it is an offence to use a vehicle whose emissions control system has been tampered with, the vehicle will fail its annual test, DVSA enforcement staff look for emulators at the roadside and can issue prohibitions and fines, and the operator's licence repute is at risk.
