How does an HGV electrical system work?
Almost all heavy goods vehicles run a 24-volt system built from two 12-volt batteries connected in series, usually in a battery box on the chassis. The alternator charges at around 28 volts. Everything in the cab, from the tachograph and telematics to the fridge and the night heater, draws from those batteries when the engine is off. The starter motor needs a very high current for a few seconds, which is why a healthy pair of commercial batteries and clean, tight connections matter more than on a car.

How to jump-start a 24-volt truck safely
Follow the vehicle handbook first; the order and the designated points vary by manufacturer. The general procedure is:
- Switch off the ignition and all accessories on both vehicles, apply the parking brakes and make sure the vehicles are not touching.
- Use 24-volt-rated jump leads or a booster pack designed for commercial vehicles. Car jump leads are too thin for the current and a 12-volt booster will not start a 24-volt truck; connecting one across a single battery is dangerous and unbalances the pair.
- Connect the positive lead to the positive jump-start terminal on the flat vehicle first (many trucks have a dedicated terminal in the battery box or engine bay), then to the positive on the donor.
- Connect the negative lead to the donor's negative or earth point, then to a solid earth point on the flat vehicle away from the batteries, such as the jump-start earth stud or the engine block, not the battery negative terminal, so any spark is away from battery gases.
- Start the donor and let it run for a few minutes to put some charge into the flat batteries.
- Start the flat vehicle. If it does not crank within a few seconds, stop and wait; do not hold the starter.
- Once running, remove the leads in reverse order and keep the engine running for a good while. Do not switch off at the next stop expecting it to restart.
Never disconnect a battery or jump lead while the engine is running; the alternator can produce a voltage spike that damages control modules. Never use a welder or a battery charger set to boost with the batteries connected unless the handbook allows it.
When you should not jump-start
- The battery is frozen, cracked, swollen, leaking or smells of gas; a frozen battery can explode.
- There is visible damage to the battery box, cables or terminals.
- The vehicle shows an electrical fault or a burning smell, or a fuse or fusible link has failed.
- You do not have 24-volt-rated equipment or cannot identify the designated jump points.

What tests should the attending technician do?
A proper call-out includes a load test or conductance test on each battery individually, a check of charging voltage and ripple with the engine running, a parasitic drain measurement with the vehicle asleep, and an inspection of terminals, earth straps and the battery box. If one battery fails the test both are normally replaced, because a new battery in series with an old one will be dragged down and fail early.
