Cold weather HGV breakdowns: diesel waxing, frozen air lines, AdBlue freezing and batteries
The first hard frost fills every workshop's phone. Most of those calls are avoidable with the right fuel, a serviced air dryer, healthy batteries and a checklist done in October.

Cold weather does not create many new faults on a truck. It exposes the marginal ones: the battery that was only just coping, the dryer that was overdue, the fuel that has sat in a tank since September. This guide explains the common winter breakdowns and how to prevent them.
Why does diesel wax, and what are the UK winter diesel rules?
Diesel contains paraffin waxes that begin to crystallise as the fuel cools. At the cloud point the fuel turns hazy; below that, wax crystals block the fuel filter and the engine starves, loses power, stalls or will not start. The UK diesel specification, BS EN 590 with its national annex, requires a winter grade with a cold filter plugging point of minus 15 degrees to be supplied from 16 November to 15 March, and a summer grade rated to minus 5 degrees for the rest of the year. Two situations catch operators out: an early cold snap in October or November while tanks and forecourts still hold summer fuel, and vehicles that stand for weeks with old fuel. Fuel with a higher biodiesel content also waxes at higher temperatures.
Symptoms are a vehicle that starts and then dies as the filter blocks, loss of power on the first run of the day and a fuel-pressure or restriction warning. The fix at the roadside is to warm the filter housing and lines, never with a naked flame, and to replace the filter, which will be full of wax; a mobile mechanic will carry filters and can add an anti-wax treatment to the tank. Additives only work if they are added before the fuel waxes, so they belong in the tank in November, not in the emergency call.
Why do air lines and valves freeze?
Water. The compressor draws humid air, and if the air dryer is saturated or its cartridge is overdue that moisture passes into the tanks and lines, where it freezes in valves, couplings and the lines to the trailer. The result is brakes that stick on, brakes that will not release, a suspension that will not lift, or a low-pressure warning as a frozen valve leaks. Prevention is a serviced dryer, drained tanks and attention to any vehicle whose compressor seems to cycle constantly. At the roadside a mechanic can thaw and drain the system and change the cartridge, but a vehicle whose brakes have applied through a frozen valve should not be moved by improvising around the spring brakes.
Does AdBlue freeze?
Yes. AdBlue is a 32.5 per cent urea solution and freezes at minus 11 degrees. The vehicle is designed for this: the tank has a heater and the emissions rules allow a period for the fluid to thaw before dosing is required, so a frozen tank on a cold morning is normal and the vehicle will not derate immediately. What fails is the heater, the heated lines or the pump, and those show up as dosing faults during a cold spell. Store AdBlue between about minus 5 and plus 25 degrees, do not let containers freeze and thaw repeatedly, and treat any AdBlue heater fault found in autumn as urgent. Diesel in the AdBlue tank, or AdBlue in the diesel tank, is a winter classic at busy forecourts and needs the tank drained by a technician.
Why do batteries fail in winter?
A lead-acid battery delivers a much smaller share of its rated cranking power at freezing point than at twenty degrees, while the cold engine, thick oil and cab heater demand more. Batteries that were marginal in September are flat in December. Test each battery under load in autumn, replace weak pairs together, clean and torque the terminals, fit a maintenance charger on vehicles that stand, and remind drivers to use the isolator. Jump starts must use 24-volt equipment at the designated points.
Coolant, screen wash and heaters
Check antifreeze concentration with a refractometer rather than assuming: the coolant should protect to well below any temperature the vehicle will meet, commonly to at least minus 25 degrees, and the wrong coolant type damages modern engines. Fill screen wash with a winter mix rated to at least minus 15 degrees; frozen wash and a salted windscreen is a common winter prohibition for driver's view. Test night heaters and cab heaters before they are needed, and check the fuel supply to diesel-fired heaters, which wax like the engine.
Tyres, ice and load security
Tyre pressure falls as the temperature drops, so pressures set in a warm workshop are low on a frosty morning; check them cold. Tread depth matters more on wet and slushy roads, and the winter tyre debate for trucks in the UK is mostly about traction on gradients and yards. Ice and snow on trailer and body roofs must be cleared before driving: falling ice is the operator's responsibility and has caused serious injuries. Curtains stiffen and straps loosen in the cold; recheck load security after the first few miles.
The roadside in winter
A breakdown in cold weather is a safety problem as well as a mechanical one. Drivers should carry warm clothing, a high-visibility vest, a torch, water and a charged phone, and follow the go left, get safe, get help sequence on motorways rather than staying warm in a cab on a hard shoulder. Tell the provider the ambient temperature and whether the vehicle has been standing, because waxed fuel and frozen lines change what they bring.
A pre-winter fleet checklist
- Batteries load-tested, weak pairs replaced, terminals cleaned, isolators working.
- Air dryer cartridges changed, tanks drained, compressor build-up time checked.
- Fuel: winter grade in the tanks from mid-November, filters changed, anti-wax additive dosed where the operation needs it, water separators drained.
- AdBlue heater and pump checked, fluid stored correctly, dosing faults cleared.
- Coolant strength and type checked, screen wash to winter mix, wiper blades replaced.
- Cab and night heaters run and fuel checked.
- Tyre pressures and tread checked cold, spare wheel and equipment where carried.

What to tell the provider
Registration, make and model; the exact symptom and when it appeared; the ambient temperature and how long the vehicle stood; fuel grade and when it was last filled; whether the vehicle is laden; whether the air system built pressure; and the location with access. Ask whether the provider carries fuel filters, dryer cartridges and 24-volt starting equipment.
